Since its founding in 1987, Michael’s Chinese Takeaway has strived to provide impeccable service and a unique, South African Chinese culinary journey for each of our clients.

OUR STORY | 我們的故事

In 1987, Michael and his wife, Meiling, along with their newborn, Stephanie, took on the daunting prospect of immigration, choosing Port Elizabeth, South Africa as its destination.

An oppurtunity arose where a then-spaza/fast food shop was available for takeover. The family whom we took over from, the Forlee’s, coincidently had the same Chinese Family Name as Michael, 謝,  and this is depicted in the “noodles” in our logo today !

After the takeover, Michael and Meiling tried, tested and refined continuously for years to find that perfect recipe to suit the South African public, and in the same time offer elements and blends of the traditional, authentic Chinese and Taiwanese flavours.

The menu was numbered as a solution to better understand what the customers ordered due to the language barrier. This is the same reason why we request telephone numbers instead of names as a reference when a telephonic order is placed. (Yes, its not to call you back if you’re late for pickup – to this day, Michael still only takes down the last 4 digits when requesting your telephone number)

Michael was introduced to two South African sports which was not commonly known in Taiwan, rugby and cricket. He grew a tremendous passion and love for the games and this too is how he often connects with his customers during their prompt wait for their order.

Michael’s has been a family-run business since Day 1, with daughter Stephanie and son John-Michael often seen behind the counter taking orders, answering the telephone, and also playing TV games !



In October 2018, doting son, John-Michael took over, introducing a fresh new look to the family business, and in 2019 a second branch was opened in Summerstrand, keeping the same core values of the business that has kept us operational for over 30 years, and many more to come !
